Why is a Doula important?
Thank you for visiting this site and for considering how you want to birth your baby.
Did you know that the word doula actually comes from Greek origins and means “woman servant”. It is a very interesting concept in today’s society, that you could build rapport and relationship with a woman who will be present through your entire birth. Having a doula allows the mother to be mothered during this amazing transition into motherhood!
Studies (Marshall Klaus, John Kennell & Phyllis Klaus) have shown that having a doula can:
- decrease the need for medical pain relief
- reduce the rate of ceasarean sections
- reduce the length of labour
- enhance breastfeeding and the mother/baby bond
- lower anxiety and depression postpartum

“A woman in birth is at once her most powerful, and most vulnerable.
But any woman who has birthed unhindered understands that we are stronger than we know.”
